  • Kharif vs Rabi Crops (CTET Master Classification):
  • - Kharif Crops (खरीफ): Sown in rainy season (June to September in India). Examples: Paddy (धान/चावल), Maize (मक्का), Soybean (सोयाबीन), Groundnut (मूँगफली), Cotton (कपास).
  • - Rabi Crops (रबी): Grown in winter season (October to March). Examples: Wheat (गेहूँ), Gram (चना), Pea (मटर), Mustard (सरसों), Linseed (अलसी).
  • Agricultural Operations Sequence: 1. Preparation of Soil (Tilling / Ploughing to aerate soil and bring nutrient-rich soil to top) -> 2. Sowing -> 3. Adding Manure and Fertilizers -> 4. Irrigation -> 5. Protecting from Weeds -> 6. Harvesting -> 7. Storage.
  • Seed Selection Test: Placing seeds in a bucket of water; damaged, diseased hollow seeds become lighter and float on the surface, while healthy dense seeds sink to the bottom.
  • Manure vs Chemical Fertilizers:
  • - Manure (खाद): Natural organic substance prepared by decomposition of plant/animal waste in pits; enriches soil with humus, enhances water retention capacity, makes soil porous for gas exchange, and stimulates beneficial earthworms/microbes.
  • - Fertilizers (उर्वरक): Inorganic chemical salts manufactured in factories (e.g. Urea, Ammonium sulphate, Superphosphate, Potash, NPK - Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium). Provide specific nutrients rapidly, but excessive use degrades soil texture, causes water pollution, and reduces natural microbial fauna.
  • Modern Water-Saving Irrigation Methods:
  • - Drip Irrigation System (ड्रिप तंत्र): Water falls drop by drop directly near roots through narrow tubes. Zero water wastage; ideal for fruit orchards, gardens, and arid zones with water scarcity.
  • - Sprinkler System (छिड़काव तंत्र): Rotating nozzles attached to perpendicular pipes spray water uniformly like artificial rain. Best suited for uneven land and sandy soil.
  • Weed Control & Harvesting: Unwanted plants competing with crops for light, space, and nutrients are weeds; eradicated mechanically or chemically using weedicides like 2,4-D. Separation of grain from chaff is Threshing.
CBSE Distractor Traps (Avoid Negative Marking)
  • Trap: Which of the following is a Kharif crop? Paddy, Maize, Groundnut, Cotton. (Wheat, Gram, Mustard are RABI).
  • Trap: Does chemical fertilizer add humus to the soil? Correct: NO. Chemical fertilizers provide specific mineral salts (NPK) but provide ZERO organic humus. Only organic manure adds humus.
  • Trap: Which irrigation technique is most appropriate for sandy soil and uneven ground? Correct: SPRINKLER SYSTEM (छिड़काव तंत्र). For water scarcity and fruit orchards, DRIP SYSTEM is best.

NCERT Core Facts: Crop Classification & Modern Agronomy

Crop seasonality, manure vs fertilizer differentiation, and irrigation mechanics form annual questions in CTET Paper 2:

1. Kharif vs. Rabi Crop Comparison Matrix

ParameterKharif Crops (खरीफ फसलें)Rabi Crops (रबी फसलें)
Sowing SeasonRainy season (June - September)Winter season (October - March)
Water DependencyHigh water requirement; monsoon dependentModerate to low moisture; cool climate
High-Yield CropsPaddy, Maize, Soybean, Groundnut, CottonWheat, Gram (चना), Pea (मटर), Mustard, Linseed
CTET Trap AlertMustard and Pea are RABI, NOT Kharif!Cotton and Groundnut are KHARIF, NOT Rabi!

2. Manure (खाद) vs. Chemical Fertilizer (उर्वरक)

[ Organic Manure ] ── Prepared in fields; adds abundant humus; improves water holding
[ Fertilizer ] ── Factory synthesized (NPK, Urea); zero humus; causes soil toxicity if overused

3. Modern Conservation Irrigation Systems

  1. 1.
    Drip System (ड्रिप तंत्र):
  • Water delivered drop by drop directly to the base of roots.
  • Eliminates runoff, evaporation, and weed hydration.
  • Gold standard for water-scarce regions (Rajasthan, Rayalaseema) and fruit orchards.
  1. 1.
    Sprinkler System (छिड़काव तंत्र):
  • High-pressure water rotates perpendicular nozzles, mimicking gentle rain.
  • Highly effective for uneven topographies where leveling is cost-prohibitive and on porous sandy soils.

Frequently Asked Questions (CTET Pedagogy)

How do farmers distinguish healthy crop seeds from damaged ones before sowing?

By soaking seeds in water. Pest-damaged, hollow seeds become lighter and float on water, while healthy viable seeds sink.

Why does prolonged excessive use of chemical fertilizers degrade agricultural land?

Excessive chemical salts destroy natural soil microflora and earthworms, leave zero humus, and alter the natural pH balance, rendering soil infertile.
