Don't Let a 20-Minute Bubbling Delay Cost You CTET Qualification
In offline CTET exams, bubbling 150 bubbles takes 18 to 22 minutes of mechanical time. A single misaligned row can trigger an 8-question domino error. Practice bubble-filling this chapter's solved MCQs inside Mentora's official OMR simulator.
- Definition of Force: A push or pull acting upon an object resulting from its interaction with another object. Has both magnitude and direction. SI unit: Newton (N).
- Contact Forces: Muscular force (exerted by muscles, e.g. pulling a cart, kicking a ball), Frictional force (opposes relative motion between two contact surfaces; acts in the direction opposite to motion).
- Non-Contact Forces: Magnetic force (attraction/repulsion between magnetic poles), Electrostatic force (force exerted by a charged body on another charged or uncharged body, e.g. plastic comb rubbed on dry hair attracting bits of paper), Gravitational force (universal attractive force between all masses).
- Pressure Formula: Pressure = Force / Area (P = F / A). SI unit: Pascal (Pa) or N/m^2. Inverse relationship with surface area: under constant force, smaller contact area produces higher pressure, while larger area reduces pressure.
- Practical applications of pressure: Sharp knives cut easily because thin edge reduces area; school bags have broad shoulder straps to minimize pressure on student shoulders; heavy trucks have 6-8 wide dual tyres to distribute massive load over larger road contact area.
- Liquid Pressure: Liquids exert pressure on container base and side walls; pressure increases proportionally with liquid column depth; liquids exert equal pressure at the same depth in all horizontal directions.
- Atmospheric Pressure: The pressure exerted by the weight of the air column above unit surface area on Earth. Decreases with increasing altitude. Otto von Guericke's Magdeburg hemispheres experiment proved the immense magnitude of atmospheric pressure.
- Trap: Friction acts in the direction of motion. Correct: Friction ALWAYS opposes relative motion and acts in the OPPOSITE direction.
- Trap: Electrostatic force requires physical touch. Correct: Electrostatic force is a NON-CONTACT force.
- Trap: Broad school bag straps increase pressure. Correct: Broad straps INCREASE area and therefore DECREASE pressure on the shoulders.
NCERT Core Facts: Force Classification, Pressure Dynamics & Fluids
In CTET Paper 2 Science, physics questions test contact vs non-contact force classifications, pressure inversely proportional to area, and liquid depth pressure rules.
1. Classification of Forces
A. Contact Forces (संपर्क बल)
Requires physical contact between interacting bodies:
- Muscular Force: Generated by muscular action (lifting luggage, walking, animal draft).
- Friction (घर्षण बल): Always arises when two surfaces slide or roll over each other; always opposes the direction of relative motion.
B. Non-Contact Forces (असंपर्क बल)
Acts across space without physical contact:
- Magnetic Force: Exerted by magnets on magnetic materials or other magnets without touching.
- Electrostatic Force: The force exerted by an electrically charged object on another charged or uncharged object.
- Classic NCERT Demonstration: Rubbing a plastic ruler or balloon with dry hair or synthetic cloth gives it an electrostatic charge, enabling it to attract uncharged bits of paper.
- Gravitational Force (गुरुत्वाकर्षण बल): Universal attractive force exerted by any mass on any other mass. Causes fruits to fall from trees towards Earth.
2. Pressure: Definition & Real-World Engineering
- SI Unit: Pascal ($Pa$) or \text{Newton / meter}^2 (N/m^2).
- Inverse Area Principle:
- For a given force, smaller area $\rightarrow$ much higher pressure.
- For a given force, larger area $\rightarrow$ much lower pressure.
Everyday Pedagogical Examples
- 1.Pointed Iron Nails: The tip has a microscopic contact area, creating enormous pressure to penetrate solid wood with a light hammer strike.
- 2.Sharp Cutting Knives: A razor-sharp edge has tiny area, concentrating downward muscular force to slice through vegetables effortlessly.
- 3.Broad School Bag Straps: Wide straps increase the load area on children's shoulders, significantly reducing pressure and preventing muscular strain.
- 4.Multi-wheel Heavy Haulage Trucks: Using 8 to 14 wide tyres spreads the truck's weight over a larger road area, preventing tyre blowout and highway sinkage.
3. Fluid & Atmospheric Pressure
- Pressure in Liquids:
- Liquids exert pressure on the walls and bottom of their containers.
- Liquid pressure increases with depth (P = \rho g h). Dams are built much thicker at the bottom than at the top to withstand high hydrostatic pressure.
- At any given depth, a liquid exerts equal pressure in all horizontal directions.
- Atmospheric Pressure:
- We live at the bottom of an atmospheric ocean ~100 km deep.
- Our bodies are not crushed by atmospheric pressure because the internal fluid pressure inside our blood vessels exactly balances the atmospheric pressure outside.
- Magdeburg Hemispheres Experiment (1654): German scientist Otto von Guericke pumped air out of two hollow joined copper hemispheres; teams of 16 horses pulling from opposite sides could not tear them apart.

Which of the following statements regarding pressure exerted by liquids in a container is CORRECT?
किसी बर्तन में भरे द्रव द्वारा लगाए गए दाब के संबंध में निम्नलिखित में से कौन-सा कथन सही है?
Why do school bags have broad shoulder straps?
Broad straps increase contact surface area, which decreases pressure on the child's shoulders (Pressure = Force / Area).
Is electrostatic force a contact or non-contact force?
Electrostatic force is a non-contact force that acts across distance without physical contact.
Why are dam walls constructed thicker at the bottom?
Because liquid pressure increases with depth; the bottom wall must withstand much higher hydrostatic pressure.
