High-Weightage NCERT Facts & Key Terms (द्विभाषी)
9 Core Points
  • Algebraic Fundamentals: Variables (letters representing varying quantities, e.g. $x, y$) vs Constants (fixed numbers). Terms: separated by $+$ or $-$ operators. Like terms have identical algebraic variables and powers (e.g. $3x^2y$ and $-5x^2y$); only like terms can be added or subtracted.
  • Linear Equations in One Variable: Equations where highest exponent of variable is 1. Solved using transposition (changing side reverses operator: $+$ becomes $-$, $\times$ becomes $\div$).
  • Ratio and Proportion:
  • - Ratio ($a:b$): Comparison of two quantities of the same kind and units by division. Order matters ($2:3 \ne 3:2$).
  • - Proportion ($a:b :: c:d$): Equality of two ratios. Extreme terms ($a, d$) and Mean terms ($b, c$). Fundamental theorem: Product of Extremes = Product of Means ($ad = bc$).
  • Direct vs Inverse Variation:
  • - Direct Proportion: Increase in one quantity causes proportional increase in other ($\frac{x}{y} = k$). Example: Cost of items and number of items; distance and time at uniform speed.
  • - Inverse Proportion: Increase in one quantity causes proportional decrease in other ($x \times y = k$). Example: Number of workers and time taken to complete a construction job; speed and travel time for a fixed distance.
  • Unitary Method & Percentage Applications: Simple Interest ($I = \frac{P \times R \times T}{100}$); Profit percentage ($\frac{\text{Profit}}{\text{Cost Price}} \times 100$).
CBSE Distractor Traps (Avoid Negative Marking)
  • Trap: In inverse proportion, do quantities divide or multiply to a constant? Correct: In inverse proportion, their PRODUCT is constant ($x_1 y_1 = x_2 y_2$). In direct proportion, their RATIO is constant ($x_1/y_1 = x_2/y_2$).
  • Trap: Can ratio be calculated between 50 paise and 2 rupees? First convert both to identical units (50 paise to 200 paise $\rightarrow 50:200 = 1:4$).
  • Trap: In algebra, $(a + b)^2$ is NOT $a^2 + b^2$; it is $a^2 + 2ab + b^2$.

NCERT Core Facts: Variable Abstraction, Proportional Reasoning & Equations

Algebraic word problems and proportional variations are tested heavily in CTET Paper 2:

1. Direct Proportion vs. Inverse Proportion

CharacteristicDirect Proportion (प्रत्यक्ष अनुपात)Inverse Proportion (प्रतिलोम अनुपात)
Mathematical Relation(x)/(y) = k (Constant Ratio)x · y = k (Constant Product)
Behavioral Dynamicx increases implies y increases proportionallyx increases implies y decreases proportionally
Core Formula(x_1)/(y_1) = (x_2)/(y_2)x_1 · y_1 = x_2 · y_2
Classroom Classic"If $12$ pens cost ₹$60$, what do $20$ pens cost?""If $15$ workers build a wall in $48$ hours, how many hours will $30$ workers take?"

2. Solving Linear Equations (The Balance Scale Method)

  • An equation is an equilibrium balance scale:
3x + 7 = 22
  • Subtract 7 from both sides: 3x = 15
  • Divide both sides by 3: x = 5
  • Pedagogy Tip: Teachers should introduce equations as a balanced two-pan weighing scale before teaching the transposition shortcut.

Question 1 of 2(CTET Jan 2021 & Dec 2021)

If 15 workers can build a community hall wall in 48 hours, how many hours will 30 workers take to complete the same wall working at the same pace?

यदि 15 मजदूर एक सामुदायिक भवन की दीवार को 48 घंटे में बना सकते हैं, तो उसी गति से कार्य करते हुए 30 मजदूर उसी दीवार को बनाने में कितने घंटे लेंगे?

Question 2 of 2(CTET Jan 2023)

Find the ratio of 50 paise to ₹2.50 in simplest form.

50 पैसे का ₹2.50 से सरलतम रूप में अनुपात ज्ञात कीजिए।

Frequently Asked Questions (CTET Pedagogy)

What is the primary condition required before computing the ratio of two quantities?

Both quantities must be expressed in the exact same unit of measurement (e.g. converting rupees to paise, or meters to centimeters).

What is the relationship between the product of extremes and the product of means in a true proportion?

In any proportion a:b :: c:d, the product of extremes equals the product of means (a × d = b × c).
