5 Core Points
  • Van Hiele Levels of Geometric Thought: Level 0 (Visualization / Recognition: looks like a door/wheel), Level 1 (Analysis / Descriptive: identifies properties like 4 sides), Level 2 (Informal Deduction / Ordering: understands relationships e.g. all squares are rectangles), Level 3 (Formal Deduction: constructs formal proofs), Level 4 (Rigor: abstract mathematical systems).
  • Tangram: A traditional Chinese puzzle consisting of 7 geometric pieces (5 triangles of various sizes, 1 square, 1 parallelogram) used to develop spatial sense and symmetry in primary school children.
  • Place Value vs Face Value: Face value is the intrinsic value of a digit (e.g. face value of 7 in 754 is 7). Place value depends on the position (e.g. place value of 7 in 754 is 700). Difference problems are asked in every CTET Paper 1.
  • Tessellation (Tiling): Covering a flat surface using repeating geometric shapes with no gaps or overlaps. Squares, equilateral triangles, and regular hexagons can tessellate a plane.
  • Symmetry and Nets: 2D patterns that can be folded to form 3D shapes (e.g. a net of 6 squares folds into a cube; a cylinder net is a rectangle with two circles).
CBSE Distractor Traps (Avoid Negative Marking)
  • Trap: CBSE asks what level a child is at if they say 'a square is also a rectangle because all opposite sides are equal and angles are 90°'. Correct: This is Level 2 (Informal Deduction / Relationships). If the child only lists properties, it is Level 1 (Analysis). If they recognize by visual appearance alone, it is Level 0 (Visualization).
  • Trap: CBSE tests the difference between place value and face value of a number (e.g. In 56431, difference between place value and face value of 6 is 6000 - 6 = 5994).

NCERT Core Facts: Van Hiele Levels, Tangrams & Number Pedagogy

In CTET Mathematics (Paper 1 & Paper 2), geometric development theory and spatial puzzles appear in virtually every exam session.

1. Pierre & Dina Van Hiele's Levels of Geometric Thinking

LevelName of LevelWhat the Child Can DoClassroom Indicator / Exam Trigger
Level 0Visualization (Recognition)Identifies shapes by visual appearance as a whole."A rectangle looks like a door; a circle looks like a chapati or coin." Cannot define properties.
Level 1Analysis (Descriptive)Identifies and describes individual geometric properties."A rectangle has 4 sides, opposite sides equal, 4 right angles." Cannot relate shapes to one another.
Level 2Informal Deduction (Ordering / Relationships)Understands that properties are related and one shape belongs to a broader class."All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares." Understands hierarchical class inclusion.
Level 3Formal DeductionConstructs axiomatic geometric proofs and theorems.Secondary school level (Class 9–10 Euclidean geometry).
Level 4RigorCompares different axiomatic systems (Non-Euclidean geometry).University / College level mathematics.

2. The 7-Piece Tangram Puzzle

  • Originating in ancient China, the Tangram consists of exactly 7 geometric shapes (*Tans*):
  • 5 Triangles (2 large, 1 medium, 2 small)
  • 1 Square
  • 1 Parallelogram
  • Pedagogical Objective: Used in Class 3–5 NCERT textbooks to teach spatial visualization, rotational symmetry, congruence, and perimeter.

Authentic CBSE exam questions tested directly from this NCERT chapter.

Question 1 of 2(CTET Dec 2021 / Jan 2022 / Aug 2023)

A child recognizes a rectangle simply because it looks like a door or a blackboard. According to Van Hiele's theory of geometric thinking, at which level is the child?

Question 2 of 2(CTET July 2019 / Jan 2024)

How many total pieces does a standard primary-school Tangram puzzle contain?

एक मानक प्राथमिक विद्यालय टैंग्राम पहेली में कुल कितने टुकड़े होते हैं?

Frequently Asked Questions (CTET Pedagogy)

What is Level 2 in Van Hiele's model of geometric thought?

Informal Deduction (or Ordering/Relational), where students understand the logical relationships between shapes (e.g. recognizing that all squares are rectangles).

How many pieces make up a traditional Tangram puzzle?

7 pieces: 5 triangles, 1 square, and 1 parallelogram.

What is the difference between place value and face value?

Face value is the number itself; place value is the value of the digit based on its position (units, tens, hundreds, thousands).
