How does Model Quantization contribute to Green Computing?

By converting 32-bit floats to 8-bit integers, memory access bandwidth is reduced by 75%, allowing models to execute on low-power edge processors with much lower battery and electricity consumption.

Which UN SDGs are directly targeted by the ASSEB Class XII curriculum?

SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Learning Outcomes

Understand Sustainable AI principles and its role in accelerating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Analyze how AI solutions drive SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Quantify the environmental footprint of large AI clusters: energy consumption, water cooling, and carbon emissions.
Differentiate between Green AI (efficiency-first) and Red AI (compute-intensive benchmark chasing).
Implement model optimization techniques: Post-Training Quantization (FP32 to INT8), Pruning, and Knowledge Distillation.

Board Exam Scoring Tips

In board exams, connect AI directly to specific UN SDGs: SDG 13 (Climate Action: flood warning systems), SDG 4 (Quality Education: regional language tutors), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger: crop disease detection).
Define Quantization: 'The process of constraining model weights and activations from high-precision continuous representations (FP32) to lower-bit discrete representations (INT8).'
Explain the Green AI vs. Red AI distinction in 3-mark questions.

Key Takeaways

Sustainable AI addresses both AI *for* sustainability (using AI to fight climate change) and sustainability *of* AI (lowering model power draw).
Training large language models can emit hundreds of tons of CO2; Green AI advocates reporting carbon costs alongside accuracy metrics.
Post-Training Quantization converts 32-bit floating point weights (FP32) to 8-bit integers (INT8), shrinking model size by 75% with virtually zero accuracy loss.
In Assam, Sustainable AI empowers rural schools to run state-of-the-art offline AI tools on modest hardware without expensive GPU servers.
Unit 6 carries the highest individual theory weightage among subject units (8 theory marks) plus Part A Green Skills (2 marks).
