Why is Linear Algebra fundamental to AI?

Because all data (images, text embeddings, sensor streams) is represented as vectors and matrices, and model operations are matrix multiplications.

Learning Outcomes

Grasp fundamental mathematical concepts essential for AI: Linear Algebra, Statistics, Probability, and Calculus.
Understand vectors as 1D arrays, matrices as 2D grids, transpose operations, and vector dot products.
Compute descriptive statistics: Mean, Median, Mode, Variance, and Standard Deviation.
Understand basic probability rules, sample spaces, and conditional probability.
Explore calculus concepts: rates of change, slopes of curves, and gradients in optimization.

Board Exam Scoring Tips

Practice computing the vector dot product of two 3D vectors by hand: $[a_1, a_2, a_3] \cdot [b_1, b_2, b_3] = a_1 b_1 + a_2 b_2 + a_3 b_3$.
State the formula for Mean: $\bar{x} = \frac{1}{n} \sum_{i=1}^n x_i$, and Standard Deviation: $\sigma = \sqrt{\frac{1}{n}\sum (x_i - \bar{x})^2}$.

Key Takeaways

Linear algebra provides the language for representing multi-feature data and image pixel arrays.
The vector dot product calculates weighted sums, which forms the core calculation of artificial neurons: $\mathbf{w} \cdot \mathbf{x}$.
Median is resilient to extreme outliers, whereas Mean is sensitive to skewed data.
Calculus gradients tell machine learning models which direction to adjust weights to minimize loss.
