Fix Arduino Uno R4 SoftwareSerial Not Working: Switch to Hardware Serial1

Quick Answer (AEO / 60-Second Summary)

Symptom: You migrate a working Arduino Uno R3 project that uses #include <SoftwareSerial.h> (e.g., SoftwareSerial mySerial(12, 13); or mySerial(4, 5);) to the Arduino Uno R4 Minima or Arduino Uno R4 WiFi. On the Uno R4, SoftwareSerial either fails to receive any bytes, outputs garbled framing errors, or rejects pins that worked on the Uno R3.

Root Cause (Renesas RA4M1 IRQ Pin Restrictions & Unnecessary Bit-Banging):

The Arduino Uno R4 replaces the 8-bit AVR ATmega328P with a 48 MHz 32-bit Renesas RA4M1 (ARM Cortex-M4) processor. On the RA4M1, SoftwareSerial RX only works on pins routed to hardware external interrupt (IRQ) channels: Pins 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 12, 13, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5—and its bit-banged timing is sensitive to RTOS/Wi-Fi interrupts.

More importantly, SoftwareSerial is completely unnecessary on the Uno R4! On the old Uno R3, developers only used SoftwareSerial because Pins 0 and 1 were shared with the USB port. On the Arduino Uno R4, the USB Serial Monitor (Serial) is completely independent of Digital Pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX), which are driven by a dedicated Hardware UART (Serial1)!

The Solution:

Delete SoftwareSerial and Use Hardware Serial1 on Pins 0 and 1: Wire your GPS, Bluetooth, or RS-485 module to Pin 0 (RX) and Pin 1 (TX), and use Serial1.begin(baud) while simultaneously using Serial.begin(115200) for your PC USB Serial Monitor—with zero upload conflicts and zero CPU bit-banging!

If You Need a 2nd External UART: Only if Pins 0/1 are already taken by another UART device, instantiate SoftwareSerial using a valid RA4M1 IRQ pin for RX (such as Pin 2 or 3).

Technical Deep-Dive: Uno R3 vs. Uno R4 Serial Architecture

For fifteen years, every Arduino Uno R3 tutorial taught beginners the same survival rule: "Never connect a GPS or Bluetooth module to Pins 0 and 1, because Pins 0 and 1 are shared with USB! Use SoftwareSerial instead."

On the Arduino Uno R4 (Minima and WiFi), that rule is obsolete:

ARDUINO UNO R3 VS. UNO R4 UART ROUTING COMPARISON: Classic Arduino Uno R3 (ATmega328P - Single Hardware UART): ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ [USB Port] ──► [16U2 Bridge] ──┬──► ATmega328P UART0 (Serial) │ └──► Pins 0 (RX) & 1 (TX) │ ◄── COLLISION! └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ Modern Arduino Uno R4 (Renesas RA4M1 - Independent Dual Channels): ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ [USB-C Port] ─────────────────────► USB CDC / SCI (Serial) ◄── PC Serial Monitor! │ │ │ [Pins 0 (RX) & 1 (TX)] ───────────► Hardware SCI2 (Serial1) ◄── 100% Independent! └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Feature

Arduino Uno R3 (ATmega328P)

Arduino Uno R4 (Renesas RA4M1)

PC USB Serial Monitor Object

Serial (Shares Pins 0 & 1)

Serial (Independent of Pins 0 & 1!)

Pins 0 (RX) & 1 (TX) Object

Serial (Conflicts with USB!)

Serial1 (Dedicated Hardware SCI UART!)

Can you upload code with a device on Pins 0 & 1?

No (stk500_getsync error)

YES! (Uploads over USB without touching Pins 0/1)

Valid SoftwareSerial RX Pins

Any digital pin (2–13, A0–A5)

Only IRQ-capable pins: 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 12, 13, A1–A5

How to Migrate Your Code from SoftwareSerial to Serial1 on Uno R4

Simply move your peripheral's wires to Pin 0 (RX) and Pin 1 (TX) and replace mySerial with the built-in Serial1 object:

// BEFORE (Uno R3 SoftwareSerial - Unreliable on Uno R4):// #include <SoftwareSerial.h>// SoftwareSerial mySerial(12, 13);// AFTER (Uno R4 Native Hardware UART on Pins 0 & 1):void setup() { // 1. USB Serial Monitor to PC (Works simultaneously!): Serial.begin(115200); while (!Serial && millis() < 3000); Serial.println("Uno R4 USB Serial Monitor Ready!"); // 2. Hardware UART on Pin 0 (RX) and Pin 1 (TX): Serial1.begin(9600); // Supports up to 115200+ baud effortlessly!}void loop() { // Forward data between Hardware Serial1 (Pins 0/1) and USB Serial (PC): if (Serial1.available()) { Serial.write(Serial1.read()); } if (Serial.available()) { Serial1.write(Serial.read()); }}

The great news about switching from the Uno R3 to the Uno R4 WiFi (or Minima) is that you no longer need SoftwareSerial at all!

Why You Needed SoftwareSerial on Uno R3 (But Don't on Uno R4)

On the old Uno R3, Digital Pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX) were shared with the USB port, so you had to use SoftwareSerial on other pins to avoid breaking USB uploads and the Serial Monitor.

On the Arduino Uno R4, the Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller has a dedicated Hardware UART (Serial1) on Digital Pins 0 (RX) and 1 (TX) that is 100% separate from the USB port (Serial)!

Furthermore, the Uno R4's SoftwareSerial emulation is restricted to specific hardware IRQ pins (0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 12, 13, A1–A5) and suffers from bit-banging jitter when the Uno R4 WiFi's ESP32-S3 bridge interrupts fire.

The Fix: Use Hardware Serial1 on Pins 0 and 1!

Move your sensor/module wires from Pins 12 and 13 to Pin 0 (RX) and Pin 1 (TX), delete #include <SoftwareSerial.h>, and use Serial1:

cpp void setup() { Serial.begin(115200); // Talks to your PC Serial Monitor over USB-C! Serial1.begin(9600); // Talks to your device on Pin 0 (RX) and Pin 1 (TX)! }code snippet
void loop() { if (Serial1.available()) { Serial.write(Serial1.read()); } } `` You can upload sketches and print to the USBSerial Monitorwhile your device stays permanently plugged into Pins0and1`!
